A Scientist to Celebrate

Caltech biologist Sarkis Masmanian was recently awarded a “Genius Grant” from the Macarthur Foundation for his pioneering work on beneficial bacteria and their relationship to our health. His work explores the effect that “good” bacteria have on digestion, immunity and even neurological well-being–in a field where the vast majority of research is directed towards the “bad” bacteria that make us sick. He speaks directly and clearly about the negative effects that overuse of antibiotics and antibacterials are likely having on our “indigenous microbes.” His self-directed, creative investigations have laid the basis for the Human Microbiome Project that is seeking to identify and characterize the communities of microorganisms in healthy and unhealthy humans.
