Beyond Straight Teeth (July 10, 17, 24, 6-7:30pm)

3 weeks, 1 class per week (1.5 hours)

Three Stone Hearth's approach to nutrition is inspired by the work of an American dentist, Weston A. Price, who traveled the world extensively in the 1930s, documenting the vibrant health of traditional societies that were free from the degenerative diseases of modern life.  He came to believe that poor nutrition in the modern diet caused severe dental and structural problems with the jaw — "the collapse of the middle third of the face" — which has profound implications for our overall health. This essential series by Dr. Mona Moy builds on that work and those insights.

1.  Restorative Breathing: a foundation for health

In the first of this three part series, you will learn about the negative health impact of mouth breathing, which is not how we evolved to breathe properly, as well as what you can do to prevent and treat it.  Dr. Moy will guide you through exercises that both children and adults can easily adopt in a daily practice to support proper breathing, swallowing and posture, and even release the congestion of sinus and ear aches.

2. Beyond a Beautiful Smile: posture, body mechanics and proper functioning of the mouth and jaw

Proper swallowing and good “tongue posture,” along with overall body alignment, play a crucial role in our health. Dr. Moy will explain the relationship of oral function and posture with vibrant health, and look at what we can learn from Ancestral societies.

3. You Are What You Eat: nutrition, hormonal balance and oral health

In a world that promotes fast and easy foods, with doctors and “experts” offering contradicting diets and an ever-changing array of “superfoods,” it's hard to know how to best support our families through proper nutrition. Grounded in the wisdom of Ancestral Diets, Dr.  Moy will discuss how nutrition can aid in preventing tooth decay and support healthy development of the face and jaw, as well as the hormonal aspects of how nutrition affects growth and development in children, which is her area of specialization — and specifically what we can do to help our children achieve vibrant health beyond straight teeth.

Dr. Mona Moy is a Berkeley-based dentist, with a focus on Functional, Integrative Biologic dental medicine for children, particularly alternative orthodontic treatments. Her education spans disciplines from the East and West. She is the only dentist to become a fellow of the American Society of Endobiogenic Medicine and Integrative Physiology, which looks at the health through the lens of integrated systems theory, grounded in the workings of the endocrine system, which produces hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, sleep, and mood.

Cost is $75 for three classes, $30 walk-ins if space is available. Three consecutive Wednesdays.
